Agent 64: Spies Never Die is an upcoming Steam game that draws clear inspiration from Rare’s GoldenEye 007, widely regarded as one of the best FPS titles of all time. Fans have long mourned the cancellation of the official GoldenEye 007 project that surfaced in 2021, but this new indie release on Steam may help fill that void.
Few first-person shooters have been as influential as GoldenEye 007. Rare’s 1997 classic revolutionized the genre, most notably with its split-screen multiplayer that set the standard for future shooters. Its lasting impact has inspired many games to replicate the formula over the years, though few have managed to capture its magic. Based on its teaser and trailers, however, the upcoming Agent 64: Spies Never Die looks like one of the rare titles that comes close to recreating GoldenEye 007‘s nostalgic gameplay.
Agent 64: Spies Never Die Is an Ode to GoldenEye 007 and the Nintendo 64 Era of FPS Games
Developed by Replicant D6, Agent 64: Spies Never Die is an upcoming retro-styled FPS game on Steam that pays homage to the classic shooters of the ’90s and the Nintendo 64 era. It will feature a story-driven campaign with around 14 missions, along with a newly announced Online Arena mode that supports up to eight players in 4v4 matches. A playtest for this mode will begin soon, and fans can already request access through Agent 64‘s Steam page. Likely inspired by the original GoldenEye 007, the game will also include built-in split-screen competitive modes for local play. While the developer plans to launch the game in 2025, an exact release date has yet to be announced.
Fans of co-op shooter games will likely find plenty to enjoy in Agent 64: Spies Never Die, which supports both couch and online cooperative play. Friends will be able to tackle the full story together on the same device or through online multiplayer. The game will also include a challenge mode, where players face off against preset bot squads with unique missions. Looking ahead, Agent 64 will offer mod support across all its modes, along with a Paradox Mode that adds built-in cheats and playful presets to keep the action fresh.
Those craving more retro FPS action like GoldenEye 007 can also check out Turok on Steam. The enhanced port comes with added features that should keep fans of the genre entertained while they wait for Agent 64: Spies Never Die. Turok offers a similar low-poly FPS experience, but it takes players on a Jurassic Park-style adventure to hunt down hostile dinosaurs.
